KBS RUSTSEAL
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION:
KBS Coatings’ 3-STEP SYSTEM of RustSeal (a moisture-cured urethane), KBS AquaKlean
(an industrial strength water-based cleaner / degreaser) and KBS RustBlast (a powerful rust remover / metal etch) is the most effective rust and corrosion prevention system available today. RustSeal chemically bonds to bare metal to form a permanent, moisture resistant finish that is flexible yet won’t crack, chip, or peel.
Because RustSeal is moisture-cured, this superior coating is made even stronger by continued exposure to moisture. RustSeal is also highly resistant to some of the most aggressive chemicals such as acids, alkalis, salts, abrasive materials, fertilizers, coal dusts, solvents, oils, and other refined petroleum products.
ALWAYS WEAR PROTECTIVE GLOVES AND SAFETY GLASSES when using KBS Coatings’ 3-STEP SYSTEM. Please heed all warning and caution notices on containers and cans.
IMPORTANCE OF PREPARATION:
Despite what others may lead you to believe, it does not matter how good the rust prevention product is if the surface is not prepared properly. Organic and corrosion contamination will block and inhibit any coating from penetrating and adhering to the surface. Simply put, the cleaner the surface, the more effective RustBlast will work and the deeper RustSeal will penetrate and permanently seal the surface.
SURFACE PREPARATION:
FOR BEST END RESULTS, apply RustSeal to clean, dry, bare metals with good surface profiles such as rusted, sandblasted, porous, and abraded textures it can “bite” into. Newly sandblasted metal surfaces usually require little preparation other than blowing off loose dust and are the ideal choice for direct RustSeal applications. For all other rusted metal surfaces, remove any LOOSE rust and corrosion using a wire brush or wire wheel. Surface contaminants including oil, grease, and road film must be removed with AquaKlean. AVOID any solvent-based cleaners as they can leave an invisible residue which can affect the RustSeal adhesion. For maximum performance, follow with RustBlast to remove surface rust, etch the metal, and leave a zinc phosphate coating (a white powdery film) for superior RustSeal adhesion. For all smooth or shiny metal surfaces, we recommend a light scuffing with 400 grit sandpaper followed by AquaKlean and RustBlast systems. For previously painted surfaces, remove all paint via chemical stripping followed by AquaKlean and RustBlast systems. If unable to remove any or all paint from metal surfaces, lightly scuff with 400 grit sandpaper followed by AquaKlean. NOTE: If RustSeal is applied over an existing painted coating and not bare metal, it may not permanently seal rust but it will provide a durable, moisture-resistant coating.
RUSTSEAL APPLICATION:
Always work in a well ventilated area. Ideal RustSeal application temperatures are 13º to 28ºC. Use only in moderate to dry atmospheric conditions i.e. 55% humidity or lower. AVOID applying RustSeal in extreme humid conditions because it is impossible to keep the metal dry and bubbling and improper adhesion may occur. DO NOT SHAKE CAN. STIR contents thoroughly each time you use it making sure the pigments are well dispersed. DO NOT PAINT OUT OF CAN. Dispense a working amount of RustSeal into a separate container (steel or glass is best) and seal can immediately. Unused paint should NEVER be put back into the can as it will shorten its shelf life and cause pressure buildup possibly popping the lid. Keep can groove free of paint by using a scoop or KBS Paint Spout. Use plastic food wrap between the lid and the top of the can to stop metal to metal contact as RustSeal is extremely strong and tough and can permanently seal the lid. Store can in a cool dry place.APPLY RustSeal to prepared surfaces by brush, roller, or spray equipment. Brush marks will level out as if sprayed.
IF SPRAYING, ALWAYS WEAR AN AIR SUPPLIED RESPIRATOR: or an approved Type A organic vapor particulate respirator. Spray pressure of 250-330kpa for siphon/pot guns and 170-250kpa for gravity/top container guns. Thinning is not generally required, but if needed 5%-10% is normally adequate. Use KBS #1 Thinner only. Always apply a MINIMUM of 2 full coats (40-50um each coat) for general applications. For marine or industrial applications, apply a minimum of 3 full coats (40-50um each coat). Recoating can be done once the first or consecutive coat is dry-to-touch. FOR BEST RESULTS, always apply coats consecutively within 6 hours of each coat curing. Average cure times are 2-4 hours, depending on humidity levels. REMEMBER: The more humidity or moisture in the air, the quicker RustSeal dries.
TOPCOATING RUSTSEAL:
RustSeal will need to be topcoated in areas that are exposed to direct UV rays (sunlight). Continual exposure to UV light will cause RustSeal to become cosmetically altered or discolored. The rust protection, however, will not be destroyed and will remain intact. RustSeal can be topcoated with any paint within 6 hours of its cure. If RustSeal has cured for more than 6 hours, scuff the surface with 400 grit sandpaper and then topcoat. In areas not exposed to UV light, RustSeal will seal and encapsulate just like a topcoat.
CLEAN UP:
KBS #1 Thinner is ideal for clean up. IMPORTANT: RustSeal must be cleaned up before it dries. It cannot be removed by any solvent once cured. Remember to always wear protective gloves to avoid skin contact and temporary staining. If skin contact accidentally occurs, immediately remove with KBS #1 Thinner followed by soap and water.
